Operating model

We tie database operations to a system, not to individuals.

In conventional DBA consulting, assurance depends on one expert being available. In our model it comes from a redundant team, defined processes, continuous monitoring and measurable service levels.

01Proactive operating model

Not after the problem. Before users notice.

Every estate is run through the same cycle. Each step produces defined outputs, and those outputs feed the next step.

Continuous monitoring

Monitor

Health indicators, critical thresholds, the backup chain and replica state are tracked continuously; trends become capacity forecasts.

Step outputs

  • Threshold tracking
  • Capacity forecast
  • Backup and replica checks

02Building blocks

Seven components, one way of working.

  1. 01

    Redundant team

Several engineers know every environment. Leave, illness or turnover does not stop operations.

  2. 02

    SLA

Priority levels, response times and communication channels are defined by contract and reported on.

  3. 03

    Continuous monitoring

Critical thresholds, the backup chain, replica state and capacity trends are tracked without interruption.

  4. 04

    Incident management

Incidents follow a defined flow: detect, classify, respond, inform, root cause.

  5. 05

    Reporting

Environment health, risks and work done are shared with management in regular reports.

  6. 06

    Documentation

Environment knowledge, procedures and decisions are written down; every engineer works from the same source.

  7. 07

    Proactive improvement

Findings become an improvement roadmap; the environment gets stronger with every cycle.

03Sample priority model

Incidents are classified by business impact: a sample model.

The P1–P4 structure below is a sample classification model. Level definitions and response and resolution targets are agreed with each organisation in its SLA; this page makes no time or service commitments.

Illustrative example — not real client data

LevelDefinitionExample situationsApproach
P1CriticalA production service is down or data loss is at risk.Database unreachable; writes stopped; suspected corruption. The on-call engineer engages immediately; continuous updates; root cause report afterwards.
P2HighThe service runs but is seriously affected, or redundancy is lost.Marked performance degradation; replica out of sync; broken backup chain.Priority response; regular status updates; root cause review.
P3MediumLimited impact; a workaround exists.A single report slows down; a maintenance job fails.Planned fix; tracked in the next status report.
P4LowRequest, question or planned work.Permission request; configuration question; planned change. In request order; under change control.

04Critical incident flow

No improvisation during an incident.

An incident at midnight is handled with the same steps as one at noon.

  1. T+0

    Detect

The incident is logged from a monitoring alert or a report.

  2. T+1

    Classify

Priority is set by business impact; the SLA clock starts.

  3. T+2

    Respond

The on-call engineer responds using documentation and runbooks.

  4. T+3

    Inform

The organisation is kept informed through agreed channels.

  5. T+4

    Root cause

Once closed, the incident's cause is analysed.

  6. T+5

    Lasting fix

A change to prevent recurrence is planned; the procedure is updated.

Sample scenario: the log disk fills on the primary replica

T+0DetectMonitoringThe log disk crosses its critical threshold; the alert reaches the on-call engineer and an incident is logged.Internal log
T+1ClassifyOn-call DBAImpact is assessed: writes are at risk of stopping → critical priority.First notice to the organisation
T+2RespondOn-call DBAFollowing the runbook, a log backup is taken, the open transaction driving growth is found, space is secured.Status update
T+3InformOn-call DBA → client ITService restoration and the temporary measure are explained.Incident closure notice

05Reporting cadence

Management always knows what is happening.

Report frequency and content are agreed with you as part of SLA design.

Continuous

  • Critical threshold alerts
  • Incident records and status updates
  • Backup and replica checks

Periodic

  • Status report
  • Health check findings
  • Changes made

Strategic

  • Capacity and risk assessment
  • Security review
  • Improvement roadmap

Sample operations report

The page management sees every period.

The status report brings together environment health, incidents in the period, changes made and the improvement roadmap. The example below only illustrates the format: the organisation, incidents and statuses are fictional; report content and cadence are agreed with each organisation and do not constitute a service commitment.

06How we differ from conventional DBA services

Not a resource. An operating model.

In the conventional model, assurance depends on personal effort. In ours, it depends on process, team and measurable service levels.
